In our Creative Curriculum work the children in Year 2 have been learning about the history of St. Mary and St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Primary School.
The children were very interested to discover that the original school building was located on the opposite side of Stella Lane on the site where the flats are today. There was a girls school and a boys school with only 65 children in total; 34 boys and 31 girls. Not many children went to school past the age of 7 because they were often working down the coal mines. The children had wooden desks and chairs and sat in rows.
The current school opened in 1975 and was extended in 2002.
