Ned White had a very successful career throughout his life. Many amazing things were created because of him, including the carousel!
Born in 1836, Ned grew up in the town of Durham, with a love of rides and amusing games. Furthermore, his ambition was to create fairground rides. A famous jockey was his father with many riches whereas; his mother was scared of horses. He rode his father’s horse, which had the name moonlight, at the age of 4! All of this together gave him the idea of creating a ride called the ‘carousel’. Unfortunately, both his parents died when he was only 6 and a half.
Following on from his childhood, Ned decided to take up designing and create rides. Outstandingly he earned hundreds of pounds in his first month of work! However, it was very hard- finding out how much it would cost to have the steel and paint shipped over from the U.S, and which builders were available. Finally he was able to create the carousel. Can you even guess what he did next? He created the Blaydon race fairground! Throughout Ned’s career, he won various prizes-but the best he even was awarded, ‘was the best fairground designer in Britain!’ Even a fairground was built for Ned to keep in his garden! With a beautiful golden horse on top, it stood out in the little town of Blaydon. But eventually, after 59 years of age, he died in 1895, by falling from one his rides and breaking his skull.
Without Ned White, the Blaydon races may never have been carried out; he was the most skilled designer Gateshead knew. Many people met him and got to see his amazing designs. He was best known for his talkative personality, and imaginative rides. Will you be like him? …
Ned White had a large interest in fairgrounds. He had such a big interest that he created his own! This biography will tell you a little bit more about Ned Whites early life, later life and main achievements.
Ned White was born in April 1836 in a town called Durham. As a young boy, he enjoyed fairground rides. All of his family loved to ride horses, which meant that Ned was riding most of his early life. Ned rode horses from the age of 5. His father was a famous jockey, so that is where the love of horses grew from. As he became a teenager, Ned drew fairground rides as an ambition. One of these drawings was the famous carousel. Ned White, ready and filled with hope, entered his carousel drawing in to a competition. He made the carousel because his family loved horses. In his drawing there was a large, black horse standing on his hind legs at the top. Ned was to call it Betty, after his father’s horse.
Following on from Neds early life, he won the fairground ride competition! His prize was the carousel actually being created! Amazingly, after this outstanding achievement, Ned created various fairgrounds. One of his fairgrounds was the Blaydon Race fairground! All of these made him extremely famous! Lots of money was owned by Ned White! Sadly, Ned died after trying one of his new rides before using it in his fairgrounds. It was an unfortunate end for Ned and now that fairground ride has been adapted so it is safer for children using it nowadays.
